Solving the Friction Problem: Why the Open Web Needs Agentic Infrastructure

Deploying $20 million across major walled gardens takes minutes. Spending $200,000 across broadcast, radio, or local print can take six weeks of manual back-and-forth. The issue isn’t a lack of audience value or reach, rather, it’s an infrastructure imbalance. Money naturally flows to where transactions are simplest, systematically defunding traditional media, independent publishers, and the open web. Following Germany’s first Agentic Advertising Meetup in Hamburg, AAO President Benjamin Masse sat down with ADZINE to discuss how open standards like the Ad Context Protocol (AdCP) are built to solve this friction, what the industry gets wrong about the "agentic" buzzword, and how we are structuring governance for long-term equity.

Moving Beyond the Buzzword

"Agentic" has rapidly become industry shorthand, but placing an autonomous agent in front of broken pipes or dirty data doesn't create transformation. Real utility comes from connecting the entire transaction lifecycle: from discovery and strategy to execution and measurement. Traditional real-time bidding (RTB) operates under sub-second constraints that force buying decisions into oversimplified molds. Agentic protocols change this dynamic by enabling complex, multi-party negotiations that programmatic auctions simply cannot handle such as pairing walled-garden distribution with verified, high-quality journalistic content in a single transaction.

Protecting Media Diversity and Democratic Flow

When diverse channels are too complicated to buy, they vanish from media plans. This isn't just an economic risk for publishers; it's a societal one. A resilient media mix requires local newspapers, linear broadcast, audio, and independent digital outlets to remain commercially viable without forcing them into walled-garden architectures. By standardizing the communication layer across disparate media types, AdCP helps ensure ad revenue flows where genuine value is created.

Open Code, Structured Stewardship

A common question surrounds our structure: If AdCP is open source, why does AgenticAdvertising.org (AAO) exist? While AdCP is entirely open-source and free for anyone to use, developing and maintaining enterprise-grade standards requires operational infrastructure, including technical governance, tokens, compliance standards, and legal frameworks. As a 501(c)(6) non-profit, the AAO finances this stewardship through accessible, tiered memberships starting at $50 for individuals up to enterprise tiers. Crucially, the governance model prevents vendor capture: our bylaws allocate 10 distinct board seats each across advertisers, publishers, agencies, and tech vendors, ensuring the protocol evolves to serve the full ecosystem rather than any single constituency.

Rather than viewing stringent European data privacy regulations as an obstacle, agentic architecture is uniquely positioned to thrive within them. Agents can process contextual signals and negotiate outcomes securely without requiring the widespread leakage or exchange of raw personal data across the bidstream.
