AgenticAdvertising.org (AAO) at Cannes Lions: A Week That Confirmed Why We Built This

If 2025 was the year the industry talked about AI, the 2026 Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity was the year agentic AI became the conversation. Not a side panel, not a buzzword, but Agentic AI was the throughline running under nearly every stage, mixer, and hallway debate on the Croisette.

And the consensus that emerged was a striking one. After years of hype, the industry didn't spend this Cannes debating whether agentic advertising is coming. The industry acknowledged that it's already here and the room kept circling back to a single, sharper question: who's steering it? Panel after panel argued that human judgment isn't a bottleneck to slow agentic AI down. It's the "indispensable guardrail" that keeps scale from becoming a liability. The language shifted too, from fearing replacement to talking about humans "taking agency" of the technology, with new roles like AI governance leads emerging to institutionalize that oversight rather than bolt it on after the fact.

That's exactly the gap AAO exists to close. A standard that embeds human judgment into agentic advertising by design — not as an afterthought, but as the architecture — was the thesis we brought to Cannes. Here's where we showed up to make that case.

Opening Night, With AAO, Scope3, Prebid, HUMAN, and Yahoo: We kicked off the week the way we think Cannes should be kicked off: with the community. Co-hosted with Scope3, Prebid, HUMAN, and Yahoo, our opening night mixer brought together a packed room of the builders, brands, and publishers actually shaping agentic advertising for the first real exchange of the week — cocktails included. Agents of Change | Our Podcast with Agnitio: We sat down with leaders across the ecosystem for a new podcast series with Agnitio, Agents of Change, asking questions cutting straight to the heart of where trust actually lives: where do you already trust an agent to act, where do you insist on a human in the loop, and looking a decade out, what job in advertising disappears, and what new one doesn't have a name yet. The answers ranged further than we expected. Full episodes drop soon. Stay tuned.

AAO Panel | Made by Machines. Meant for Humans. Winning Trust in the Cre(ai)tive Economy: On stage at The Haven by HUMAN, we brought together Amanda DeVito (Butler/Till), Mike Chevallier (iHeartMedia), Christina Cubeta (Scope3), Sarah Acker (HUMAN), and Priti Ohri (Advertible), for a session built to move past the hype cycle: an honest inventory of where AI is actually operating autonomously today versus where it's still promise, what it takes to earn real trust, and what marketers need to own as brand strategy, creative, and media collapse into a single continuous loop. This is what we at AAO call the Cre(ai)tive Economy. The room's takeaway: creativity and automation aren't opposing forces. In an agentic world, creative judgment matters more, not less. Fireside Chat: Benjamin Masse on the New Digital Age Podcast: AAO President, Benjamin Masse, joined Justin Pearse of New Digital Age for a wide-ranging conversation on governance, standards, and trust. His clearest reframe of the week: forget "human-in-the-loop," which implies humans finding out about a decision after it's made. AAO's principle is embedded human judgment, approval built into the process before an agent acts, not bolted on after. Masse also made the case that agentic is a business transformation, not an IT project, and that the biggest hurdle to adoption isn't technical, it's getting the C-suite fluent enough to see agentic as a business solution, not an engineering upgrade.

Governance Breakfast Club: We closed out the week the way we opened it — with the community, but this time in a smaller, private setting. Select attendees traded notes on what governance actually looks like in implementation, and the consensus held: real humans are still behind the agents.

The Thread Through All of It: Every session, every conversation, every hallway aside kept landing in the same place: the technology is ready to scale faster than any human team could. Whether it earns the industry's trust depends entirely on whether human judgment stays built into how it operates, not layered on top after the fact. That's the standard AAO is building. See you next year.
